Eleven years of compulsary education, and according to a report today, some parents have trouble reading a bedtime story to their kids. How do you go eleven years at school and come out not being able to read? Especially if its at bedtime story for kids level...
Yes, I know what you're thinking, its probably down to dyslexia, or some other form of learning difficulty, and I accept that some of it is down to that, but not all of it. Apparently 5 million adults lack functional literacy. Thats apalling....
So whats the problem? Well, I imagine that when most of these adult were at school, because they found it too hard, they just 'couldn't be bothered', but some of the blame must be borne by the educational institutions too.
As a footnote, Im not expecting many people to comment on this, because the target audience probably wont have a clue what I've written :-)

When most of these people were at school???? probably the lack of school attendance that caused the lack of being able to read for the majority of them. And you can't blame the typical teens truancy cos most kids can read at 6 or 7. Matthew is able to read anything put in front of him nowadays at 8.
Therefore I blame the parents, and believe me I know of cases of kids at 5 or 6 whereby teachers have to call round to the homes to drag the kids to school cos the parents can't be bothered to get them up and ready. I also know of cases of 9 10 year olds getting younger siblings ready and taking them to school.
What chance do these kids have when this is the parents attitude?
You also have the hidden child carers who are looking after ill/disabled parents and hide it from the rest of the world, therefore taking priority over their own education.
I could ramble on this subject for days, but I think you get the picture.
For once, Angela, we utterly agree on something!
Now theres a change, maybe its cos I'm getting older & wiser
maybe its cos you are both talking shit, oh btw hello im able to comment again, but dont know how long blogger will let me.
the problem isnt with the parents.....well not totally, the problem IMHO is with the government, they have for a number of years been too worried about targets and not about actually teaching schoolkids properly, when i was at school, if we were being taught a subject and a child in the class didnt understand something he/she would be shown by the teacher until they did understand it, nowadays and i would say for the last 10/15 years the teachers cannot spend the time going over things again and again, because they just simply dont have the time to, because they have set things they have to be "up to" by certain times in a school year, how many kids now know their times table? how many kids now can add up without a calculator? in fact how many kids now get half the decent education we got when we were at school? they are all coming out of school with fantastic exam results but to be honest the exams they are taking we could have passed them at 11 or 12 years old. and the people that have been subjected to these learning practices are probably the first batch of parents that are now having trouble reading stories to their kids, as for carers looking after relatives rather than going to school, this will only be a small percentage and hasnt it always happened? the main problem is league tables, these bloody things are making head teachers scared shit of looking bad in the press, when i was at school i had probably the best teacher ever, Mr Butterick (he is the guy who formed the childrens university) he was a brilliant teacher but if he taught today like he did then he would be sacked, could he today tell the kids to pack away their stuff cos he was bored and its a nice day so we are going to go outside and sit on the grass to have a sing song, or tell everybody to bring their PE kits tomorrow cos if we finish our work well enough we are going to go and play rounders or football? he could do this because we all respected him and worked well so we could get these little treats, and why did we respect him? because he was under no pressure to hit "targets" so he made learning fun and it worked.
so parents have to take some blame but i think we should get back to actually teaching kids and not just hitting targets and looking good in league tables.
Oh great, Philips back. Speaking of talking sh!t, are you sure its bloggers fault you can't post or comment anymore? :-D
Its his age...hes doesn't understand new technology. Me personally never had any problems with posting comments.
Mind you I must be getting old cos Sam said some clothes I got him were Emo????? I asked him what emo meant and he just laughed. Was in a tenants house the other day and the grand daughter used the word too. I take it its the new 'in' word
So if someone knows what ERmo means please enlighten me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo_(slang)
Im still none the wiser though :-)
So are they rockers?
maybe its because of my age that i do actually know what an emo is angie!!!! you see i listen to my kids and they tell me, and as for it being technology i dont understand and have trouble with posting i seem to have managed for long enough, but when the machine will not physically allow you to post there is not a lot you can do about it is there, when the progress bar at the bottom just keeps repeatedly reloading you cant do a lot no matter what age you are or how much you understand technology!!!!! it isnt only the clothes that show you are an emo, did you know that self harm is also a pert of the emo style, they actually make slashes to their wrists and arms, god knows why but, maybe its their age!
oh and by the way it isnt a "new" in word its been a style for quite a while but maybe you are getting old and out of touch.
