Thats something that I'll never do again! I have invested in an IPaQ 3870 pocket PC and a Holux GPS.
I loaded Tom Tom on the IPaQ yesterday, and everything seems to work fine. I just need to upgrade the operating system to 2005, so it can handle the bluetooth better.
I navigated home with it last night, but it took me right through the centre of Lincoln, which at rush hour, isnt a good thing. I obviously need to work out how to use it properly, but hopefully this spells the end of useless sense of direction (Yes Evo, I know that might not be the case!)

I tried the function where its meant to talk via your mobile phone to find out the traffic hotspots but it was useless. If you master it, let me know.
it will be ok til you are going the way it tells you and there is an accident or another incident and the road is closed, lets see what is better in this case. sat nav or a map?
erm neither? unless you have a traffic master feed that warns you of problems, or if you're listening to 'Sally Traffic' on Radio 2 and she tells you of a specific problem
i can open my map and see an alternative route around the problem, could your sat nav (not saying i wouldnt like one, just pointing out a failing) also if it is like the route finder programs on the net they dont always take you the quickest way, as with the directions from hull to scotch corner, it sends you around the york ring road and then says take the 9th roundabout onto the harrogate road to join the A1 when it is better to just go A64 towards leeds and join the A1.
Yes, Sat Nav will work out a way around the problem. I believe that there is a traffic feed to warn you of problems too.
Sat nav ...... for people who can not map read.
$1.99 for an atlas or £200 + for sat nav. Know which one I'd chose.
And no I don't have sat nav. Never needed it.
Typical comment from someone who has never tried Sat Nav. Also, how do you read a map when you're supposed to be driving? With Sat Nav, the voice tells you which way to go.
Well for a competent driver you read the map BEFORE you set off, then just jot down main roads and junction numbers. That way you have a pretty good idea in your head where you are going.
Maybe they'll design a version for up and coming managers called GobbleGobble.
So Angela, you can remember all the positions of the speed cameras just from glancing at a map before you set off...you must have a great memory.
Why not try Sat Nav? Then you will be qualified to tell me its crap and maps are better?
Why would I need to know where all the speed cameras are? You shouldn't be speeding in the first place and if you do you deserve to be caught.
Plus the roads with the speed cameras on have road signs displayed. They are white with a picture of a black camera on. Do you really need a voice telling you what you SHOULD be able to see?
Also the static ones are so plain to see and in bright yellow so even you shouldn't have any difficulty seeing them.
So can Sat Nav tell you where the movable speed camera locations are? Plus how will Sat Nav stop you from getting a ticket when they all go digital and are able to calculate your average speed between cameras? Do you not think they already know the majority of us only slow down at the point where the cameras are?
Well as I said before, go away, and try Sat Nav before saying its not as good as maps - luddite.
Yes, sat nav can tell you where the mobile speed camera's are, but you would know that already if you bothered to check it out. Go away and try the technology out before you slag it off.
Alternatively, keep on believing you know best, and share with us your pearls of wisdom without actually knowing what you're talking about.
All I am saying is your £200 + lighter than me in that area.
Its a very expensive atlas
It cost less than 100 gbp. Its nothing like a map, which you would know if you had actually ever used one.
and why would I buy sat nav when I never get lost from maps???? Would be a waste of money for me and I have 2 kids to spend my money on. (and before you say anything Sam lives here full time only seeing his mum once a fortnight for 1 night)
now now stop it you 2!!!. i used to have a speed trap detector until it got stolen when my car was nicked by joy riders, only trouble with it was that it not only picked up the radar from a speed trap but also the beam at traffic lights, automatic doors, petrol stations, and anything else that involved a beam. you were listening all the time for different types of bleeps, although i must admit it saved me in hornsea one night when it bleeped near the mere, in a spot it never did before, i went around the corner and there was pc plod with his little gun, i was doing 29mph, i gave him a little smile as i drove by, angela does have a point though, if you dont speed you dont need to worry,(all i will say is she must have changed how she drives, i remember being behind her in the escort she used to have and she was like shit off a stick) and there are signs where there are cameras, cant argue with that. and i have never tried sat nav, dont really know anything about them and if you can programme them to find a way around an incident then i suppose they are as good as a map there. i still know that the route finders on the net sometimes send you longer ways than are possible, are the sat navs guilty of this sometimes?
im loving this, its usually me and evo at each other, do you feel left out evo?
Not changed my driving style at all, I just know HOW to drive and where to do it ;-).
In fact Rob is the one usually nagging me to drive more sensible.
lol, I hadn't spotted the chaos ensuing here.
I am on the side of sat nav although I think the technology still has a fair way to go yet. Another four or five years and it will be great.
I was intrigued to learn of Angies tremendous powers of memory though. She's saying that if there's a blockage in the road, the map will be easy to find an alternative route and she doesn't need to read this map whilst driving because she's done it before she set off. So she must actually memorize all alternative routes just in case of accidents. It's just such a shame they don't have mastermind anymore, she must be able to give Fred Housego a run for his money.
I always have the atlas to hand in the passenger footwell whenever I am driving long distance and that allows me to navigate round incidents, and before anyone comes up with a daft comments about reading it whilst drtiving, if Im stuck at an incident I will be stationary, and I have a good sense of direction so as long as I am heading in the right direction you usually end up somewhere near where you should be. I aint as good as Rob though, he actually uses the position of the sun to guide his sense of direction and heads off using the sun to navigate round incidents, having memorised all suitable routes to our destination. If he wanted a woman whining directions at him he'd have me and wouldn't need to spend money on a Sat Nav.
Well until we're all 'super couples' like you two, abl to memorise vast journeys, and navigate by the sun, I'll stick to my sat nav thanks.
Maybe when you've actually tried one, we can have this lively exchange of views again, in the meantime, I think you're missing Coronation Street...
Coronation Street, What's that then. Last time I watched an episode Sarah's boyfriend had just come out of the closet. Dont watch much TV. Too busy studying maps or playing sudoku, you know that game for people with brains.
Then I suppose there's the issue of how many miles we travel in the year.
I manage to clock up 40,000 plus all over the country. £200 for a sat nav was paid for in just a couple of weeks in saved time and petrol.
i bet robs knackered with the old night driving then ;0).....................not much sun then. he might follow the sun only to find its a distant streetlight
It may be possible to tell the time from the sun, though I would come fom a position of scepticism on this one, but as for navigating by it, I think you are confusing driving with sailing.
And guess what, sailers switched to Sat Nav a long long time ago.
Sodoku is shite. I can say this with absolutely no authority at all, as I have never ever done a Sodoku puzzle, but it is a newer game than crosswords, which in my superior opinion, are much better. I often like to memorise every single cryptic clue and fill the answers in while I wedge my head right up my own arse.
does rob put his ear to the floor at an accident to see which way the traffic is coming from and going to to find a way around, a little like the scouts did when the cowboys were looking for indians in the wild west
ka kuro is much better than sudoku, i bought a game for the computer its got loads of puzzles on, tried to sell it on e bay but nobody wanted it, so if anyone is interested contact me.......£1.99 and please leave good feedback lol.
I'll have it off you.
:-D Hmmmm Jane
i dont even know who jane is but she sounds great already
Jane is the English woman voice on TomTom. She sounds very prim :-)
Well I suppose you have to hear a female voice from somewhere Mark.
Well Id rather listen to white noise than your shrill tones :-)
It has to be a female voice so you know the information you are receiving is correct.
oi you two kiss and make up.
not into kissing family.
Angie, Mark now lives in Lincoln so kissing family is a daily occurance. You don't want to know what they do in the chicken sheds!!
they keep chickens dont they?
